Today we went to the Sierra Nevada for a hike in the beautiful mountains. We were afraid that it would be a walk in the watery mountains, but luck was on our side and the rain held off. So the day started with games on the lawn (it sounds more civilised than it actually was) and then we packed all the clothes that we had in case of bad weather and headed off, an intrepid group, into the mountains.

After a stomach churning drive on narrow mountain roads we arrived at base-camp and set off on our walk. After a short detour (Empar and Miss Turton were just consulting about the route) we followed an old mining tram track along the side of a river. We passed hair raisingly steep drops, through deep, dark tunnels and scrambled over bridges spanning ravines before finally arriving at our destination: a relaxing spot by the river. However, all was not tranquil for long as Scott began rock climbing, Paula was the first with her feet in the river and Fernando and Juan went for an unexpected swim. After a long, hot drag back up the hill, we were all pleased to see the bus again at the end of our mountain adventure.

The next stop was an environment centre in the Sierra Nevada where we watched a video and learnt about the history of the mountains. Miss Turton had us all pretending to be tectonic plates but we were more interested in recharging our energy supplies with a bag of crisps. Another terrifying roller coaster ride down the mountain found us back in the city of Granada where we did some preparation for the party that night.

Back at the hotel and after a hasty dinner, everyone showered, covered themselves in glitter and put on their best clobber for the party. There was more bling than Aladdin’s cave and Coolio’s bedroom combined and it was hard to see or breathe through the fog of aftershave as the boys emerged from their rooms. We all took our invitations and sat in our numbered seats ready for the fun to begin. We all carried a present for our invisible friends or secret santa game. Everyone had been given a name and had secretly bought a present in Granada, so we then sat in a circle and formed a chain, handing out the gifts that we had bought. There seemed to be rather a lot of catapults flying around, a very popular gift, and along with Juan Jose’s boomerang (Granada?) and Karl’s juggling balls the airspace was pretty full. Jewellery, socks and nail polish were popular gifts and Charlie was given a mini guitar by Moriah.

Then the party really began as dance moves were flung across the floor and everyone was singing at the top of their voices. We’ll leave the rest to your imagination, but suffice to say, there were some very tired young people collapsing into bed at some unearthly hour of Friday morning.

Hoy fuimos a Sierra Nevada para una marcha en las bellas montañas. Teníamos miedo de que sería un paseo por la mojada montaña, pero la suerte estaba de nuestro lado y la lluvia aguanto. Así que el día comenzó con juegos en el césped (que suena más civilizado de lo que realmente era) y luego hicimos las maletas con toda la ropa que teníamos en caso de mal tiempo y nos dirigimos, un intrépido grupo, hacia las montañas.

Después de un estómago revuelto por las estrechas carreteras de montaña llegamos al campamento base y fuimos de paseo. Después de un corto desvío (Empar y Miss Turton, consultaban sobre la ruta) seguimos una pista minera antigua tranvía por el lado de un río. Pasamos por al lado de caidas empinadas, a través de profundos túneles oscuros y revueltos sobre puentes y sobr

e barrancos antes de llegar finalmente a nuestro destino: un lugar de descanso junto al río. Sin embargo, no todo estaba tranquilo por mucho tiempo hasta que Scott empezó ha escalar por las rocas, Paula fue la

primera por meter los pies en el río y Fernando y Juan se dieron un baño inesperado. Después de una larga y caliente calada,a subir la colina, estábamos muy contentos de ver el autobús de nuevo al final de nuestra aventura en la montaña.

La siguiente parada fue un centro del medio ambiente en Sierra Nevada, donde vimos un video y aprendieron sobre la historia de las montañas. Miss Turton nos hizo pasar por las placas tectónicas, pero estabamos más interesados en la recarga de nuestras fuentes de energía con una bolsa de patatas. Otro paseo en una montaña rusa aterradora por la montaña nos llevó de nuevo ha la ciudad de Granada, donde hicimos un poco de preparación para la fiesta de esa noche.

De vuelta al hotel y después de una cena apresurada, todo el mundo se duchó, se cubrieron de

purpurina y se pusieron su mejor ropa para la fiesta. Hubo más Bling que la cueva de Aladino

y que el dormitorio de Coolio combinados y era difícil de ver o respirar a través de la niebla de después del afeitado de los chicos desde sus habitaciones. Todos tomamos nuestras invitaciones y nossentamos en nuestros asientos numerados listo para la diversión para comenzar. Todos llevábamos un regalo para nuestros amigos invisibles o un juego. Todo el mundo se había dado un nombre y había comprado un regalo secreto en Granada, por lo que luego se sentaron en un círculo y formaron una cadena, haciendo entrega de los regalos que habíamos comprado. No parecía ser más bien una gran cantidad de catapultas volando por ahí, un regalo muy popular, y junto con Juan José boomerang (Granada?) Y con los malabares de Karl el espacio aéreo estaba bastante lleno. Joyería, calcetines y esmalte de uñas eran regalos populares y Charlie se le dio una mini guitarra por Moriah.

Luego de que la fiesta comenzó como pasos de baile fueron arrojados por el suelo y todo el mundo estaba cantando en la parte superior de sus voces. Dejaremos el resto a su imaginación, pero basta con decir, había algunos jóvenes muy cansados de caer en la cama a alguna hora intempestiva de la mañana del viernes.

Day 3

What a watery day! Weather reports predicted rain for today so we were expecting a downfall but one that lasted all day? Luckily, today was much more undercover than yesterday and after breakfast everyone piled onto the bus Cordoba bound. Our first stop was the incredible Mezquita. Here are some of the pupil’s impressions:

Everyone who didn’t have a waterproof jacket bought a plastic rainmac that resembled a refuse sack – consequently these were a far too uncool for Scott, Alfonso et al.

After a little time to do some souvenir shopping, from jewel encrusted turkish slippers to giant pencils we headed off to Cordoba’s Jewish synagogue and then to lunch in an asian buffet where the children made many visits – the frozen marshmallows the most popular item on the menu!

Next, the Alcazar de los Reyes Católicos. Here the pupils played information collection games and Juan impressed us all by learning a huge amount of facts about the building in a very short amount of time – he had learnt enough to take the tour himself! Others were drawing the gardens, or a mirror image of a geometric mosaic and answering questions about important names from today.

A coach ride back to the hotel through misty, rain soaked Andalucia – rolling hills and sunflowers. Back to the hotel for a dinner and games before well deserved bed time. What will tomorrow bring? Hopefully some dry time!

Día 3

¡Qué día tan lluvioso! Informes meteorológicos predijeron lluvias para hoy por lo que se esperaba una caída, pero uno que duró todo el día? Por suerte, hoy estuvimos más acubierto que ayer y después de el desayuno nos amontonamos en el autobús hacia Córdoba . Nuestra primera parada fue la increíble Mezquita. Éstos son algunos de las impresiones de los alumnos:

Todas las personas que no han comprado una chaqueta impermeable de plástico rainmac una que se asemejaba a un saco de basura - por consiguiente no les molaba a Scott, Alfonso y otros.
Después de un poco de tiempo para hacer algunas compras de souvenirs, de joyas incrustadas zapatillas de turco a los lápices gigantes nos fuimos a la sinagoga judía de Córdoba y luego a almorzar en un buffet asiático, donde los niños hicieron muchas visitas - los malvaviscos congelados, ¡el tema más popular en el menú!

A continuación, el Alcázar de los Reyes Católicos. Aquí los alumnos jugaban a juegos con la información recogida y Juan nos impresionó a todos por el aprendizaje de una enorme cantidad de datos sobre el edificio en muy poco tiempo- ¡que había aprendido lo suficiente como para hacer la visita el mismo! Otros se acercaban a los jardines, o una imagen espejo de un mosaico geométrico y contestaban preguntas acerca de los nombres importantes de la actualidad.
Un viaje en autobús de regreso al hotel a través de niebla, la lluvia empapó Andalucia, colinas y los girasoles. Regreso al hotel para cenar y juegos antes de la hora de dormir bien merecida. ¿Qué nos deparará mañana? ¡Esperemos que tiempo seco!

Impressions of the Mezquita:

I think that the mezquita was a gigantic and interesting place with very amazing objects. Karl.

I was surprised the mezquita was very big and all the decoration was amazing! It must have cost a lot of time. Ornella.

The first thing I must say is ‘Wow!’ I thought that the mequita was very small, but I have now realized that it is the second biggest mezquita in the world. I now know that it took over 300 years to build. You should go and see it for yourselves because I can’t find any words to describe it. It is a real piece of art. Carmen.

I really liked the mezquita because the information and the dedication of building it and the decorated work that people did years ago is fascinating. The facts that they told us are the thing I liked the most. Lucia.

The mezquita is divided into two parts – the catholic part and the muslims. It took 600 years to build. Fernando.

I loved the mezquita of Cordoba! Especially all the intricate arches. Even though it rained all day, I had a good time. Moriah.

The mezquita was very interesting and decorative. I enjoyed it a lot and I wouldn’t mind repeating it to make more pictures as my camera had no battery! Hannah.

Lo primero que debo decir es "¡Wow!" Yo creía que los mezquita era muy pequeña, pero me he dado cuenta de que es la segunda mezquita más grande del mundo. Ahora sé que tardó más de 300 años en construirse. Deberíais ir y verlo por vosotros mismos, porque no puedo encontrar palabras para describirlo. Es una verdadera obra de arte. Carmen.

Me gustó mucho la mezquita porque la información y la dedicación de su construcción y la decoración del trabajo que la gente hizo hace años es fascinante. Los hechos que nos dijeron es lo que más me gustó. Lucía.

La mezquita está dividida en dos partes - la parte católica y la de los musulmanes. Tardaron 600 años para construirla. Fernando.

Me encantó la mezquita de Córdoba! Especialmente todos los arcos intrincados. A pesar de que llovió todo el día, pasé un buen rato. Moriah.

Trip to Granada Day 2

Most of the children were up by 7.45 when teachers had the happy task of knocking on doors to ensure there was movement behind them – getting everyone ready to go down for breakfast. All, already out of bed, except a very bleary eyed Harry and his companions who couldn’t even get up for the door! All in all, a very good night’s sleep had by all and following a hearty breakfast, we were back on the bus.

First stop, a look around the old university and a walk around the university gardens. Looking at the building itself our guides begin to open our eyes to the baroque features of these structures and the history of King Fernando and Queen Isabel.
We then visited the multi-façade cathedral of Granada and the famous Plaza de Carbón. We all had a little bit of free time next in the centre of Granada to explore the bazaars. Lunch was a buffet and everyone ate lots and then back on the coach headed for the long awaited Alhambra visit. Our spectacular tour began in the ‘Lovers Labyrinth’ and we made our way to the royal summer retreat where amazingly temperature dropped to a chill in the favoured Sultan’s spot overlooking the valley.

Our tour guide Victoria had an incredible knowledge of dates, facts, figures and anecdotes. The tour ended in the catholic quarters of the Alhambra in Washington Irving’s private apartments where he wrote ‘Tales of the Alhambra’ in the 1800s.

Later, quite hot and very tired we arrived back in the hotel for a quick dip in the pool for those who wanted it and an opportunity to chill out for those who didn’t. A great day that ended with some children asking to go to bed!

La mayoría de los niños se levantaron a las 7:45, cuando los profesores tenían la feliz tarea de tocar puertas para asegurarse que hay movimiento detrás de ellos - conseguir que todos estén listos para bajar a desayunar. Todos, ya fuera de la cama, ¡con excepción de los turbios

ojos de Harry y sus compañeros que ni siquiera podía levantarse de la cama para ir hacia la puerta! Con todo, el sueño de una noche muy buena había por todos y después de un vigoroso desayuno, estábamos de regreso en el autobús.La primera parada, una mirada alrededor de la antigua universidad y un paseo por los jardines de la universidad. En cuanto a la propia construcción, nuestros guías empiezan a abrir los ojos a las características del barroco de estas estructuras y la historia del rey Fernando y la reina Isabel. A continuación, visitamos la catedral de múltiples fachadas de Granada y de la famosa Plaza de Carbón. Todos teníamos un poco de tiempo libre al lado en el centro de Granada para explorar los bazares. El almuerzo fue un buffet y todos comieron mucho y luego de vuelta en el autobús rumbo a la visita tan esperada, Alhambra. Nuestro espectacular recorrido e

mpezó en “El Laberinto de los Amantes " y nos dirigimos a la residencia de verano increíblemente real, donde la temperatura bajó a un enfriamiento en el terreno a favor del Sultán con vistas al valle.

Nuestra guía turística Victoria tenía un conocimiento increíble de fechas, hechos, cifras y anécdotas. La gira terminó en los barrios católicos de la Alhambra en apartamentos privados de Washington Irving, donde escribió "Cuentos de la Alhambra" en el 1800.

Más tarde, haciendo mucho calor y muy cansados llegamos de vuelta en el hotel para un chapuzón en la piscina para los que lo querían y una oportunidad de relajare para aquellos que no lo hicieron. ¡Un gran día que terminó con algunos niños pidiendo ir a la cama!

Pupils Comments

We enjoyed the Alhambra a lot because the patterns on the walls and all the interesting palaces and gardens. The guide who went with us around the Alhambra was helpful because she told us a lot of interesting facts.

What we liked about Granada was the cool games our monitor invented, and the interesting facts about the Alhambra.

The Alhambra was amazing, it was so detailed. I liked it when we had free time in Granada – even though I didn’t buy anything. It was a lot of walking though!

I found today really interesting, especially the gardens of the Alhambra – mainly the roses and the different colours. It was very hot, I got sunburnt.

I liked these 2 days because of all the shopping we did. We have a lot of freedom which means we can talk to our friends more. The games that the monitors play are cool.

I thought that Granada would be different, the Alhambra surprised me a lot, I thought that it would be smaller but I’m having lots of fun.

Although it’s hot, it has been very interesting. The things the monitors were telling us, I loved

all the Alhambra and all the fantastic legends about it!

The trip is getting better everyday --- I expected something normal but this is very, very g

ood. I wish, and it is only the second day, that the trip was longer.

This trip is quite cool! We’ve been here for two days and we are already enjoying it! The hotel is quite good…although the food is…not!

We went around Granada as soon as we got off the bus on Monday and

today we went to a cathedral and then to La Alhambra. It was cool!

Today has been a great day. The Alhambra is fantastic, spectacular and beautiful. We had a great time.

Comentarios de los alumnos:

Disfrutamos de la Alhambra mucho porque los símbolos en las paredes y todos los palacios y jardines eran interesantes. El guía que nos acompañó por la Alhambra fue útil porque nos contó un montón de datos interesantes.

Lo que nos gustó sobre Granada fue juegos guays que inventó nuestro monitor, y los hechos interesantes sobre la Alhambra.

La Alhambra fue increíble, era tan detallada. Me gustó mucho cuando teníamos tiempo libre en Granada - a pesar de que no compré nada. ¡Había que caminar mucho también!

Hoy el día ha sido realmente interesante, sobre todo los jardines de la Alhambra – principalmente las rosas y los diferentes colores. Hacía mucho calor, me he quemado.

Me han gustado estos 2 días, por todas las compras que hicimos. Tenemos mucha libertad que significa que podemos hablar con nuestros amigos más. Los juegos que los monitores nos enseñan molan.

Pensé que sería diferente Granada, la Alhambra me sorprendió mucho, pensé que sería más pequeña, pero estoy teniendo mucha diversión.

Aunque hace calor, ha sido muy interesante. Las cosas que los monitores nos decían, ¡me encantó toda la Alhambra y todas las leyendas fantásticas acerca de ello!

El viaje está mejorando cada día --- esperaba algo normal, pero esto es muy, muy bueno. Ojalá, y es sólo el segundo día, que el viaje fuese más largo.

¡Este viaje mola mucho! ¡Hemos estado aquí durante dos días y ya lo estamos disfrutando! El hotel es bastante bueno ... aunque la comida no lo es ...!

Fuimos alrededor de Granada en cuanto bajamos del autobús el lunes, y hoy fuimos a una catedral y luego a la Alhambra. ¡Fue genial!

Hoy ha sido un gran día. La Alhambra es fantástica, espectacular y hermosa. Nos lo pasamos muy bien.

First Day in Granada

8c and 8w set off subdued but quietly jubilant to Granada yesterday, 7th June. Our first view of the Sierra Nevada had pupils whooping and cheering - what an amazing sight of a snow covered mountain range in such heat! Charlie kept up spirits with his tunes and we stopped at a 'farm' to eat our picnic lunches - hogs, ostriches and Shetland ponies joined us for photo opportunities.

When we finaly arrived in Granada, ruck sacked up, we explored the Sacromonte area and the caves now inhabited by flamenco chools, museums and cafés, and our chance to see the magnificent 'Alhambra' at a closer proximity.

A juice break followed and more admiration of scenery at San Nicholas under the unrelenting heat with our guides Empar and Alex explaining the history of the area, pointing out interesting facts and fascinating trivia.

Pupils then had a taste of freedom exploring the trinkets in the souvenir shops and stalls; girls buying earrings and bracelets and boys buying elastic band catapults!

It was now time to go back to the hotel and have quick dip in the pool - now a metre more shallow - and showered and changed we were all ready for dinner. Never had so much pasta been consumed by so few so quickly!

And so to bed...

8C y 8W partieron silenciosamente pero jubilosos a Granada ayer, 7 de Junio. La primera visión de Sierra Nevada nos dejó a los alumnos impresionados y les puso contentos - y que impresionante vista de una cordillera cubierta de nieve con tanto calor! Charlie mantuvo los espíritus con sus melodías y paramos en una granja para comer nuestros almuerzos – cerdos, avestruces y ponis se unieron a las fotos.

Cuando por fin llegamos a Granada, cargados con las mochilas, exploramos el barrio de Sacromonte y las cuevas ahora habitadas por escuelas de flamenco, museos y cafeterías y nuestra oportunidad de observar la magnífica Alhambra a una distancia menor.

Tomamos un descanso para beber algo y más admiración del escenario en San Nicholas debajo del implacable calor con nuestros guías llamados Empar y Alex explicando la historia del barrio, señalando información interesante y fascinantes trivialidades.

Luego los alumnos probaron la libertad exploraron las baratijas en las pequ

eñas tiendas de regalos y puestos; ¡las chicas comprando pendientes y pulseras y los chicos tirachinas!

Era hora de volver al hotel y se bañaron en la piscina para un corto periodo de tiempo - ahora un metro más profundo – y se ducharon y se prepararon para cenar. ¡Nunca habían comido tanta pasta tan rápido siendo pocos!

Y así a la cama…

(se comportaron muy bien – luces apagadas y fuera como una luz).
